young saplings in this Russian woodland have now grown into full oak trees since the Second World War.And as they've grown, they've also swallowed up the savage instruments of death.Soldiers' helmets, guns and axes can be seen trapped in the trees as if in a Brothers Grimm fairytale.

But what began as a normal bombing operation would soon turn into the bloodiest night in the RAF’s history.Of 795 aircraft that took off from British bases to target Nuremberg on March 30, 1944, 95 would not return.More RAF men died in blazing aircraft that night – 545 – than the total killed during the entire 15 weeks of the Battle of Britain.

Rare RAF Aldergrove film from World War Two found in attic

Rare footage of Royal Air Force servicemen on duty during the first few months of World War Two has been found in an attic in Northern Ireland.It features 502 (Ulster) Squadron based at RAF Aldergrove in County Antrim.The 18-minute film contains images of training exercises and recruits relaxing during their downtime in early WW2. Some of it is rare colour film.Aviation historians are delighted by the discovery, which one described as a "window into the past".
